Men, do you keep waking up to pee? Here’s what to do about it.

All you want to do is unwind and drift off into a peaceful sleep, but you just can’t escape the urge to get up and… pee.

Waking up to pee (medically known as nocturia) affects approximately 50% of men over the age of 45 and can have significant effects on men long-term.

The most common causes of nocturia in men over the age of 45 includes;

  • An enlarged prostate – a normal part of the ageing process that puts extra pressure on the bladder
  • Poor drinking habits – coffee, tea and alcohol being the primary culprits
  • Certain mediations – such as those used to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure
  • Untreated diabetes – High blood glucose levels can increase in urination during the day and at night
  • Weaker muscles – specifically, the muscles in your bladder making it harder to retain urine

Tips from your Sleep Specialists

Feeling refreshed and energized are some of the wonderful benefits that can come from a good night’s sleep, however, it is important to note that sleep is also a critical component of overall health and one which too many men are not prioritising.

No one should have to put with the irritating urge to pee throughout the night. Here are 3 tips to help you get the quality sleep you deserve:

Reduce alcohol and Caffeine

Alcohol is known to prevent anti-diuretic hormone in the body causing frequent urination, while caffeine works directly as a diuretic. This means that if you are sipping on caffeinated beverages throughout the day and then drinking a few beers in the evening, you will end up having non-stop visits to the men’s room. Try avoiding caffeine after 12 pm and leave your alcohol for the weekends and special occasions.

Try natural remedies

For thousands of years, herbs have been used to support an array of health conditions. Studies have shown that herbs such as Passionflower can support sleep restlessness and the nervous system, while other herbs such as saw palmetto, bearberry and Tribulus can support prostate health.

Exercise

There are several mechanisms that can explain why physical activity can protect against nocturia, including reducing body size, decreasing stress in the nervous system and lowering levels of systemic inflammation, which can support overall sleep and potentially reduce the need to urinate. Try getting 30 minutes of physical activity 3-4 times a week.
