In the NZ Herald there was an interesting article on the effects of sleep deprivation on academic performance of children in schools.
This study re-inforces what a number before have shown, that interaction with screens (TV, computer games etc) can delay sleep onset by up to 90 minutes.
The article also emphasises that NZ children are among the most sleep-deprived in the world with 69% of children aged 9-10 being adversely affected at school by lack of sleep. That’s not a good average for such a small country!
We all know it’s pretty hard to limit the use of tv and computers when it comes to our children – technology seems to have taken over. But this can make them over-stimulated so that they find it hard to switch off once bedtime arrives. In an ideal world we would try to encourage passive, non-electrical activities before bed such as reading a book or playing with toys, however for those of us who find it hard to avoid the use of technology at night time, understanding that it does have an impact on your child’s ability to fall asleep will helpfully give you some more patience.
SleepDrops for Kids might also be helpful to support them to wind down and fall asleep. SleepDrops for Kids helps to nourish the nervous system and provides support to settle and calm the mind to help your child get a better nights sleep. This may mean more attentive chidren in school, improved grades and learning ability and ultimately happier parents!
