A newborn baby usually sleeps between 16 and 19 hours per day. They will often wake up every two to three hours to eat.
Because hunger will wake most babies, they will not normally sleep for more than four or five hours at a time.
However some babies sleep more than this, some babies sleep for eight or 10 hours at a time. This is determined to be safe by Doctors, as long as your baby is normal, healthy and growing.
If your baby has lost weight or is not gaining enough weight, you may have to wake her every two or three hours to feed. If this is the case your Doctor, Plunket Nurse or health advisor will tell you what to do, if this is the case.
If you are concerned that your baby is sleeping too much then please contact your Doctor.
If you baby is not sleeping as well you would like or expect please call our team at SleepDrops for Babies on 0800 7488 393 and we will do our best to help you.
